Splitting Up Together #6

So one week away from the Premiere of the show and yet there has yet to be a shift in the marketing strategy aside from the constant social media presence, some TV spots, and content on the website. Hopefully there may be some drastic shift in this marketing in the next 7 days leading up to the premiere. I am very interested to see how the underwhelming marketing for the show might affect ratings on the pilot episode.

For a quick reference I also examined the current ratings for programs in the shows current time slot both on ABC and on competing networks. What is interesting is that there is only one other 30min show that will compete with Splitting Up Together and that is Fox’s “The Mick” this could be a potential viewer problem because the show will be in a 9:30 time slot which means if the shows lead in is not strong enough many viewers may instead tune into an hour long program from 9-10 instead.

A.P. Bio #7

A.P. Bio seems to so be fairing well in its new time slot after two weeks in the slot. In its first week in the time slot it had a 0.7 rating with 2.33 million viewers and in its second week it had a 0.9 rating with 3.07 million viewers (second highest aside from the post olympics closing ceremony episode).

TVByTheNumbers so far gives the show 3/5 Cancel Bears currently meaning that the show is in the middle of the road currently as to whether or not it is likely to be picked up or cancelled. Hopefully the improvement in its numbers this past week may help push the show towards the renewal category.

Of note this past week and this week is that the NCAA Tournament is going on and will affect the ratings and viewership of programming during game times. This week especially this could be of concern as Thursday is the first night of Sweet Sixteen games which will likely dominate viewership and take away any viewers who are following the Tournament or support one of the teams playing.

Life Sentence #7

Going on week three for the CW’s new series, Life Sentence. Life Sentence seemed to have a soft opening when it comes down to ratings. It got a 0.3 for week one and 0.21 for week two within the 18-49 demographic. They had a 0.76 for week one and 0.62 for week two when counting the viewers by the millions. TVbythenumbers is up in the air on whether the show will be continued into a new season, only giving three dancing bears. It’s still early to tell though, with it only being out for a few weeks.

Advertising for the show has increased since right before the air date and then following. Social media has been covered and increased, with Snapchat advertising and cast and crew showing their support for the show and more advertising being done across networks for the show. Lucy Hale has also been on The Tonight Show Staring Jimmy Fallon a few days before the release date to discuss the show and her transition into something new.

Alex, Inc. (7)

As Alex, Inc. moves to within weeks of its release date, the big names behind the project are in the midst of vital press tours. On March 15th, Zach Braff appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, another ABC property, to promote the new show. While most of the conversation focused on Braff sharing a humorous celebrity stories, as late night talk shows usually do, the pair did dedicate three minutes to Alex, Inc. promotion. Hillary Anne Matthews, who plays a secondary character on the program, is also on a press tour.

Next, a few initial reviews are in for Braff and ABC’s new show. For the most part, the program is receiving generally positive reviews. For example, FanFest News calls the show “adorably inspiring.” It will be interesting to see if these positive reviews along with the potential benefits of word-of-mouth boost the show to the top of Wednesday’s primetime ratings.

Station 19 #7

With the premiere of Station 19 looming, the press has been buzzing with news regarding the premiere. Many local news sources have written articles regarding what Station 19 is about and how it will be parallel to Grey’s Anatomy, just with firefighters. In the “Seattle Times”, Station 19 was described for “viewers who crave sophisticated characters or innovative plotting [who] might be inclined to scream “Fire!” in a crowded living room to escape.” Meanwhile, it will run parallel to all of Shonda Rhimes shows with the classic voice-over narration, multiple strong female characters, a diverse cast, a love triangle, and some lighter moments of humor. It will continue to push the limits, as do Rhimes’ other shows. However, as for the press tour, it is interesting that none of the stars of Station 19 are scheduled to go on Jimmy Kimmel this week to promote. As for twitter, the account has been officially verified and now has over 13,000 followers. It has been tweeting gifs and sneak-peeks this week to get the fans excited for the premiere.

Black Lightning #6: Tuesday Night Competition

After special programming, this year shows on every network are settling into their scheduled times for the remainder of this season. With that being said, every premiere of a new episode of Black Lighting is in heavy competition with popular shows on other networks. At 9:00 p.m., NBC’s This is Us, CBS’s Bull, FOX’s LA to Vegas, and ABC’s Black-ish air and are proving to be huge competition for Black Lighting.

This past Tuesday, February 27th gives a sense of the how viewership and share of these shows will most likely continue to have in weeks to come. This is Us and Bull are in the lead with a 2.5 and 1.1 viewership for adults 18-49 and a share of 9 and 4. Although having a re-run episode, Black-ish ties La to Vegas with a .7 rating for adults 18-49 and a 3 share.

Although strong in ratings for The CW, Black Lighting only had a .5 rating for adults 18-49 and a share of 2. With heavy competition on Tuesday nights but still staying strong, it will be interesting to see if The CW renews the show and places it on another night where they can demand higher audience ratings.

Good Girls #6

Good Girls had a good second week as it only went down slightly to a rating 1.3 with a viewership of 5.42 million. This is particularly good considering that they were up against the finale of The Bachelor on ABC. The show is also doing really well considering that the second highest rated show of the night was Scorpion on CBS with a rating of 0.8. They have three cancelations bears in TV by the numbers which commented that a rating of 1.5 is good start. Their biggest challenge being surviving the typical decrease in ratings during spring.

Christina Hendricks continues to avoid the public eye while co-stars Mea Whitman and Retta are out doing interviews. Both of them appeared on the social media livestreaming show Build Series. While Retta made an appearance on NBC’s show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a day after the first episode aired.

The Resident #6

According to Cancel Bear on TV By The Numbers, The Resident has increased its chances of renewal. In week eighteen of the 2017-2018 television season cycle Cancel Bear gave the show three bears. Now in week twenty-three, the prediction has increased to four bears. Overall the show has an 18-49 rating of 1.28 and a renew/Cancel index of 0.58. Based on the ratings of the other shows, this looks promising.

If a show is in the negatives for the renew/Cancel index, then it is highly unlikely to get renewed. With that in mind, any renew/Cancel index above a 0.5 is highly likely to get renewed. If the show has a low renew/Cancel index but a high 18-49 rating, then the chances of the show getting renewed are also very high. You have to give the people what they want!

The Cancel Bear noted in its article that if The Resident could remain above a 1.0 rating, it would likely survive. For the next few weeks it managed to do that. However, last week it fell to a 0.8, its lowest 18-49 rating so far. However, the chances of renewal are still likely. We will have to wait until May 2018 to see!

Deception #6

It’s no secret that the stars of the new crime drama are not A-list celebrities. That is not to say that they are not the best actors for the roles. Sometimes, a fresh face can bring an unbiased and surprising love for a new show.

The @DeceptionABC Twitter account is following only 10 people–the producers, the stars, and the ABC network Twitter account. Interestingly enough, the two stars of the show, Jack Cutmore-Scott and Ilfenesh Hadera are the only accounts followed that are not verified. Justin Chon, a writer, actor, producer, and internet celebrity, is verified and he is not even the lead of the show.

The producers and writers are expected to have a professional and respected social media presence, even if many of them have not tweeted since 2017. The two stars of the show, Cutmore-Scott and Hadera should make more of an effort to interact with potential audiences and promote the upcoming series themselves.

Being a TV actor comes with being personable, especially with fans. Hopefully once the show begins next Sunday, the fans will tweet at them and encourage the actors to connect with them.

Deception #5

With just a week until the premiere of the new combination magic and crime series, Deception, the marketing team is enhancing its social media presence. Its Twitter presence embraces meme-culture with GIFs of the stills of the show and humorous captions, in hopes that the ability to relate to the show will improve retweets.

More boomerangs are reposted on Instagram and Twitter as well as more formal Facebook posts. The essence of the social media posts show that the team is appealing to a younger demographic–A18-49.

Next Sunday, March 11th on ABC, we will be able to see if this social media presence has paid off.
